The Granit from the land of Sauna

When selecting sauna stones, particular attention must be paid to the
best quality. So nowhere near every granite is suitable for the production
of sauna stones. In an expert report written for the company SaunaSteine.de by
the geological service of Dr. Olaf Otto Dillmann, the Finnish rock types were
critically analysed for their thermal resilience. The most important criterion
for a high quality sauna stone is the structure of the minerals and the
mineralogical composition. The Finnish sauna stone olivine diabase
is exceptionally resistant to extreme temperature fluctuations.
In addition, it also possesses an extremely high heat retention
capacity, so that the temperature will not spontaneously fall when the
vapour hits it.
However, the pure mineral olivine has a tendency to shatter under high stress –
in other words, when it is under great heat. Sauna stones with an olivine
content of more than 40% are inclined to porous flaking. For this reason, the
olivine content of our original Finnish sauna stones is less than 17%.
Before every new detonation the rock face is examined by two well known
geological institutes for any occlusions which might be dangerous to health.
This ensures that our sauna stones do not contain either asbestos or any
other hazardous substances.
Mining of the rock face is only started after this has been authorised.
This high quality is probably unique in the world, and alongside the ISO 9002
certification is proof of the high quality of our stones.
